As a former creative director in advertising, I’ve always been interested in the power that words, visuals and hype have over people. Now as an artist, I’m trading the dreams I manufactured for consumers, to uncover the authentic desires and aspirations that people keep locked away.
I WANT started with my personal collections (concert stubs, baseball cards, high school yearbooks, business cards and things I’ve grown attached to) and now the works utilizes the personal artifacts of others as source material. Here I discovered how these collections I’ve accumulated, were actually hiding secret wants that I’ve been afraid to expose in public. As unique as a dream can be, none of these works use the same material twice.
After the collections are collaged onto large 4×6 canvases, the words “I WANT…” are carved away. What’s left is a window through the artwork, an unfulfilled dream both conceptually and in structure. I WANT is a fantasy based body of work, that will extend as far as there are human desires. I hope my vulnerability and honesty in the pieces will grant viewers a safe space to reflect on their own dreams and desires – because I believe if they remain untold, they will never have the power to manifest.
